Do You Suffer from Migraine Headaches?

Headaches and Migraines & Chiropractic Treatment

From tension or sinus headaches to migraines, a chiropractor can help.

Each type of headache may have a different cause, from restrictions or fixations of the joints in the neck to muscle tension or vascular changes. Chiropractic care investigates the root cause of the headaches and corrects that specific problem. Our chiropractors work to restore normal movements in the joints, reduce muscle tension and allow the nervous system to function properly again.

Headache Medication and Migraine Medication

NSAIDs and Acetaminophen are often recommended as first-line treatments for headaches and migraines. They offer temporary relief of inflammation and pain in some patients, however, they come with side effects that mean long-term use is not recommended. These include increased risk of cardiovascular or liver disease and intestinal bleeding. Determining and treating the root cause of the problem whether that is muscle tension, alignment of your spine, hormone imbalances, food sensitivities, posture, etc. offer long-term relief without side effects.

Other Natural Treatments for Headaches and Migraines

There are a number of natural remedies that can ease headache pain and prevent a recurrence.

Acupuncture is effective and safe for pain relief and provides headache and migraine prevention.

Herbal remedies

Herbs can be used to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation and prevent headaches and migraines. Feverfew and Butterbur are two commonly used herbs for this.  Our naturopathic doctors can advise regarding the optimal use of these herbs.

Diet can be a significant cause of headaches and migraines. We can help identify food triggers or food intolerances that may be causing them either through an elimination/challenge diet or through food sensitivity blood testing. Minerals like magnesium can help relax tense muscles that contribute to migraines. Vitamins like B6 can help with serotonin production and histamine breakdown, both factors that can contribute to migraines.

Massage Therapy

Muscle tension is often a significant contributing factor to the onset of headaches. Regular massage therapy can keep muscles loose and relaxed and while in the throes of a migraine or a headache can help relieve muscle tension that may be aggravating it.  Talk to our RMT about how massage helps migraines or headaches.
